 Bergamot

Almost everyone likes bergamot's fresh, and lively but gentle, flowery fragrance. Its sedative and yet uplifting characteristics make it an ideal oil to use in an oil burner, bath or in massage for anxiety, depression and nervous tension.

Its cooling and refreshing quality seems to soothe anger and frustration probably by decreasing the action on the sympathetic nervous system. It is a valuable antiseptic for the urinary tract and infections and inflammation such as cystitis. It may be used as an inhalation for respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, bronchitis and tuberculosis. Combined with tea tree it is used as a treatment for cold sores, chicken pox and shingles. Its antiseptic properties make it ideal for treating wounds, herpes, acne and oily skin conditions. It is an effective deodorising agent.

Characteristics - A light greenish-yellow liquid. with a fresh, sweet-fruity scent and slightly spicy-balsamic undertone.

Wellbeing - Its calming qualities may help improve listlessness and anxiety. They may also help prepare you for more restful sleep.

Body - Offers relief for stomach cramps, colic, flatulence and digestive discomfort associated with these symptoms. Helps ease the discomfort of menstrual and premenstrual symptoms and manage some symptoms of menopause. May benefit blood circulation, particularly in the limbs.

Skin - Excellent antiseptic qualities for minor wounds. Seems particularly effective with oily skin. The comfort it offers for skin irritations is enhanced when combined with eucalyptus. Soothing for insect bites and sunburn.

 

Aromatherapy Uses:

  • Skin Care:- acne, boils, cold sores, eczema, insect bites, oily complexion, psoriasis, scabies, spots, varicose ulcers, wounds.

  • Respiratory System:- halitosis, mouth infections, sore throat, tonsillitis.

  • Digestive System:- flatulence, loss of appetite.

  • Genitourinary System:- cystitis, leukorrhea, pruritus, thrush.

  • Immune System:- colds, fever, flu, infectious diseases.

  • Nervous System:- anxiety, depression, stress related conditions.

Cautions: The oil can cause irritation if used on sensitive skin. It is also phototoxic - do not use on exposed skin during long exposure to sunlight or pigmentation may occur. (Avoid exposure to the sun after having used bergamot in massage or bath)

Blends well with chamomile, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, jasmine, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, palmarosa, patchouli, ylang ylang.

Chamomile, Roman 

Roman Chamomile is generally used to treat psychological problems. Roman Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects, though to a lesser degree than German Chamomile. Roman Chamomile is a useful oil for women with irregular periods and PMS, ideally used in a bath or as a massage oil. For abdominal pain, gall bladder and throat infections, and for children suffering colic, moist warm or hot compression assist healing.

 

Aromatherapy Uses:

  • Skin Care:- acne, boils, burns, cuts, chilblains, dermatitis, earache, eczema, inflammation, insect bites, rashes, sensitive skin, wounds.

  • Circulation, Muscles and Joints:- arthritis, inflamed joints, muscular pain, neuralgia, rheumatism, sprains.

  • Digestive System:- dyspepsia, colic, indigestion, nausea.

  • Reproductive System:- dysmenorrhea, menopausal problems, menorrhagia.

  • Nervous System:- headache, insomnia, nervous tension, migraine and stress-related complaints.

Physical Uses: flatulence, diarrhoea and stomach complaints. Irregular painful periods. Toothache, teething pains. Skin antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Stimulates cell growth.

Mental/Emotional: soothes the nervously over excitable. Relieves mental strain and stress. Relieves depression and insomnia.

Magical Properties: inhale the scent before meditation to promote a feeling of calm.

Cautions: Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising. Avoid during pregnancy, particularly in the early months.

Blends well with bergamot, clary sage, geranium, lavender, lemon, sweet marjoram, neroli, orange, rose absolute or otto, rosewood, sandalwood, ylang ylang, patchouli.
